Regardless of whether you believe in Astrology, Chinese or Western, compatibility is important in any successful relationship. This is not to say that you and your partner have to like all the same things and be exactly alike. It is not a matter of having someone that is like a mirror image of yourself to share your time with. In fact, if this were true, there would be issues from the start and the relationship would be doomed to failure.

You want to find a person that enjoys some of the same activities that you do. If you both like completely different things, there is nothing for you to share when you spend time together. It makes the time strained for one person or the other. It also creates uneasiness and can create unhappiness in the end. This will result in the end of your relationship. It is perfectly acceptable to like different things and have a successful relationship. However, you cannot be completely opposite. There has to be some common ground so that you have things to do during your time together.

You will want a person that shares some characteristics with you. Of course you want them to have their own personality and be their own person. The differences are important for success. You will get bored if you are both too much alike. You will also have conflict between yourselves when you get comfortable with each other. There is nothing to add to the relationship. You both exist as one. You have to have some difference to discuss and add spice.

It is important that people in relationships have similar ideals relating to life and events in it. If you are religious, you would want to be with someone that shares religious values. If you have a desire to have a family, then you would want to be with a partner that also has a desire for family. In regards to life ideals, this is where compatibility is a must. There is nothing like finding a person and falling in love with them. You feel that you are destined to be together. Then, you decide to move your relationship forward.

You have your idea of how things are going to be. Your partner all of a sudden crushes your hopes and dreams. The Court cards of the suit of Swords are the embodiment of the element of Air that represents thought & intelligence. The swords are the mirrors of the subconscious & represent the development of opinions & beliefs. Usually associated with potential they can often indicate an affinity with spring & can be represented by Aquarius, Libra & Gemini astrologically. An abundance of Swords in a questioners spread can prove challenging & a balance of other suits is preferable to diffuse the severity of these double edged cards. Intelligence is central to the Court cards of the Swords suit, though if badly placed or reversed can indicate that the person is likely to be stubborn & not easy to negotiate with. The King of Swords
Standing before you judgementally, between you the sign of his suit. He has parallels to the symbol of Justice in the Major Arcana. Quick to assess situations & make decisions this King should be approached with honesty & respect. The Butterfly wing represents the Butterfly effect of how this King’s decisions can have instant repercussions around the world. The flaming tree represents the speed that decisions can be implemented by the sword of this suit.

The Queen of Swords

To her right the weapon of the suit. You can sense a feeling of regret, sometimes around lost loves. She takes no prisoners. The butterflies represent her thought process & the ability to raise her mind above everyday issues. Fiercely independent, her decisions are based on logic not emotion. Can represent a very private individual & the stormy sky can indicate holding on to resentment.

The Knight of Swords

The white horse symbolising focus & purity of intent. Again the birds & butterfly indicate thought patterns above the norm & an extreme clarity of vision. The electrical storm embodies the energy & force of this card. His sword always cuts through to the truth of the situation. The skill, bravery & mental capacity of this knight can reveal the truth behind any turbulent circumstance. The downside is that the intelligence of this Knight can occasionally border on madness.

The Page of Swords

A lithe, perceptive, active figure; his sword upright, he moves decisively & quickly. He is passing over rugged icy terrain, linked to his ruthless nature. The clouds swirl wildly around him, disguising his true intent. He is alert and confident, looking directly at you, though fully aware of his environment. Vigilant he can be secretive & deceptive, as symbolised by the scorpion. He is a messenger bringing opportunities, though not always to be trusted.

There are many cards that signal to me that a questioner has issues with relationships. I was giving a reading earlier today & the pierced heart of the Three of Swords left me in little doubt that the lady involved was feeling relationship pain. However it transpired that this was from a much earlier partnership & she had been carrying this emotion around for a long time & even allowing it to scupper any fresh encounters. It is often the case but until we learn the lessons from our emotional encounters we won’t be able to progress towards finding a fulfilling relationship.

There is a certain degree of fear that exists within any relationship. For some people this fear is overwhelming. They will avoid dating or pursuing relationships due to the fact that they are scared. They may have had bad experiences in the past. They may just be shy or have their own reasons for being afraid.

Some people simply have a fear of commitment. They may be afraid of losing their freedom. They may not want to risk being hurt. The first thing to do in conquering fears is to admit that you are afraid. Be willing to say you have a problem. This is often the most difficult step on the process of overcoming the fear. Once you can open up and talk to people, they will be able to see that you get the help you need to get better. If you do not talk about your fear, there is no way for anyone to help you deal with it. You may not be dealing with it yourself. Perhaps you have put it in the back of your mind and are pretending that there is nothing wrong.Once you cross this boundary the results are incredibly liberating !.

After you have admitted your fear, you can start to deal with it and overcome it. There are many ways to deal with your fear. Perhaps you need to have someone to talk to. Maybe a friend or family member is a good source of help for you. Talk with people and see what help they can offer you. Perhaps someone has been through the same things or something similar and can offer you expert advice. If you do not get any answers from your support system, look for fear related discussion groups. You can do a search on the internet to find groups in your area. This puts you in touch with people that are suffering the same way that you are. Do not try to date while you are overcoming your fears. This is a sure way to set you up for failure. You are not completely happy with yourself. Continuing my journey through the Court cards, the court cards, though puzzling initially are fantastic indicators of the people who are in, or are going to impact, the questioner’s life. I find it useful to describe the energy that I am picking up from any court card that appears as sometimes the questioner will recognise the personality traits and know who the card represents. Sometimes even if the card represents a different sex you can sense & interpret the qualities of the individual the cards are trying to portray. This is why I think it is wise to avoid learning a regimented meaning for each card & just interpret the person you feel coming through.
Each of my Pages indicates the seed of the personality of the suit. The Pages always bear messages related to the inherent qualities associated with their court.
Knights take the inherent qualities of their suit to the next level, the youths of the suit. Learning to trust in their choices & abilities, fight for their beliefs, sometimes in the extreme.
The Queens of each suit take the seed of the Page, the enthusiasm of the Knight and magnify these qualities to nurture & expand on the characteristics of their court to encourage development & growth.
Kings are the embodiment of the energy of each suit. The power that drives & commands their court. They are leaders, innovators, their ambition to achieve their goals is very motivational. Usually larger than life personalities, they will certainly command attention.

The King of Cups
An emotional creative fair man, educated, knowledgeable on spiritual matters with strong intuition. Seen with a short sceptre to his left, the ornate cup of this suit to his right; his domain is the sea; on one side a ship is seen riding the waves a colourful fish is leaping. Divinatory Meanings: Dawning of life changing ideas. The arrival of a messenger. Advancement, propositions or invitations that should be capitalised on, opportunities that should be recognised.

Page of Cups
A pleasing personality, sometimes eccentric. A master of gentle persuasion. Able to manifest an emotional response in those he interacts with. Seen contemplating a fish messenger rising from the cup of the suit. Often instrumental in defusing volatile situations
Divinatory Meanings: Fair young man, one who is adept at social interaction, will be of use to the questioner with solid advice. Educated, emotionally intelligent. Bearer of news, can stimulate messages from the subconscious.

The Tarot Court Cards

The Court cards can cause confusion when someone begins to interpret the Tarot. Many years ago I abandoned the little white books that come with Tarot decks & decided to rely on intuition to decipher the message my deck was showing me. I list the accepted meanings of the court or ‘people’ cards here. As I have progressed through designing my Tarot deck I have met inspirational people who embody the essence of the card for me. They now represent the court card & as you can see there are still some blanks waiting to be filled !. When a ‘person’ card lands in a questioners spread there are certain standards that apply, like the Pages always represent messengers, though as I said I like to open up my intuition & try & describe the person that my Tarot deck is trying to refer to.

The Page of Wands

A young creative person has a message of great importance. He is unfamiliar but trustworthy and his knowledge will surprise.

Divinatory Meanings: Dark young man, faithful, a lover, an envoy, a postman. Beside a man, he will bear favorable testimony concerning him. Not to be crossed, especially if followed by the Page of Cups. Has the primary qualities of his suit shown by the flaming wand. He may signify family concerns that need to be dealt with.

Reversed: Anecdotal information, announcements, unsettling news. Possibly indecision and the instability which accompanies it.

The Knight of Wands

Enigmatic & conscious that life is a journey, with a sprouting wand, is not on heading in to battle. He is passing through a desert like landscape. The energy of his horse is symbolic of his energy, and suggests that the questioner is embarking on an exciting phase, with life-changing consequences.

Divinatory Meanings: Departure from the norm, an exciting encounter, flight, movement. A dark young man, friendly & gregarious. Change of residence.

Reversed: Instability, division, interruption, discord.

Queen of Wands

The Wands throughout this suit are always budding, representing potential, as it is a suit of creativity and action. Emotionally and in interpretation, the Queen’s personality corresponds to that of the King, but is more diplomatic & alluring.

Divinatory Meanings: An intuitive woman, a channel, sociable, respectable, loving, honorable. If the card beside her signifies a man, a romantic connection is possible; if a woman, she is of great importance in the life of the questioner. Focused, & extremely powerful in capturing creativity & applying it to a business environment.

Reversed: Economical social interaction, too obliging. Can represent unfounded opposition, jealousy, & gossip or underhand behaviour.

The physical and emotional nature to which this card is attributed is intelligent, enigmatic, respected, aarticulate, impassioned & noble. The King wields a flowering wand, and exhibits a scroll beside his crown. He connects with the symbol of the lion, Leo which blazes in glory between the salamander messengers .

Divinatory Meanings: Erudite man, personable, educated, honest, conscientious. The card always signifies honesty, and involves unexpected information revealed before very long. Reversed: Good prospects, but challenging; a time of honest reviewal of prospects.

Court Cards a general overview

People tend to fall into particular personality types whether they be introvert or extrovert, optimist or pessimist, philanthrope or misanthrope and so on. There are a number of psychological and behavioral tests that exist to determine these personality types. The same principle applies to the reading of tarot cards. The court cards in tarot, represented by Queens, Kings, Pages and Knights, are generally considered to be the most difficult to read. The reason for this is because what the cards represent depending on the querent is somewhat ambiguous. However when understood properly they are one of the most useful cards to signify people in a querent’s life.

The trick to fully understanding court cards is to know what they signify in the context of a given spread. Court cards usually refer to people, whether it be the querent themselves of someone in their life. In general Queens and Kings refer to adults, Knights to youths and Pages to young children. Though the court cards usually refer to people this does not have to be the case. They can also carry symbolic meaning. For example a Knight could represent a ‘trip’ or ‘journey’ given that they ride on horseback. A King may refer to personality traits involving leadership and command.

Another helpful way to put the court cards into context is by using Zodiac signs. If you are uncertain of the meaning of a particular court card then you can look to it’s Zodiac sign. What Zodiac signs the court cards are aligned with will depend on the deck you are using. Using Zodiac signs shouldn’t be a hard and fast rule however, they are merely there to guide you if you are otherwise unsure. If you have a string inclination that the King/Fire is a Taurus but the pack has aligned it with Capricorn then you should go with your own intuition.
