The Fool.

Meaning in a Tarot reading :

Appearance :
My Fool is dressed in Jester’s garb with a crown of laurel leaves & a red feather. He carries his
possesions in a bundle over his shoulder & carries a staff. He is oblivious to the fact that he
appears to be about to walk over a cliff. His dog is jumping up as if to warn him.

Interpretation :
As with many of my cards I am the model for The Fool. I along with a lot of people have indeed spent
periods of my life wandering aimlessly with no real thought to my eventual destination.In this card
The Fool seems un-aware that he is about to fall into the abyss. The colours in the card represent
the myriad stimuli that distract The Fool at every turn. The Fool is spiritually aware but follows
aspects of all systems rather than organised religion.
His napsack ( in my case a NIKE shoebag ) is filled with gadgets ( 3 iPods ! ) and various
accumulated things deemed ‘important’, unfinished books & papers. The truth is he is slightly
mad !. Borderline dispraxic he is unable to quite exist in the real world. His view of life is very different
from other peoples & he finds it impossible to focus on one thing at a time. Everything seems equally
important. He is a dreamer & a visionary, an inspired lunatic.

My Relationship with The Fool

I totally relate to The Fool. A few years ago I was tested & found
to be on the “autistic spectrum”. While I am in no way debilitated by
this it suddenly brought my life in to focus. I am indeed like The Fool
and often exist in my own little world. I find it difficult to relate
in many common social situations. I am often not sure when or if to
speak & can go too far or talk incessantly. I have perfected
'listening' to people, but have in fact formulated my answer before
they have even finished the question. Boredom is a problem & my
mind flits & is just as un-focussed as The Fool, I would indeed fall
over the cliff …

Thank God for Apple computers, one symptom is a constant quest for
information. With my trusty Powerbook in my backpack I can quickly find
out how to do anything ! I in fact am learning to enjoy being on a
different frequency & it has certainly helped me focus on the
journey of Tarot.

Appearance :
A phallic Magic wand connects Heaven & Earth. A hypnotic character,
The Magician has convinced the Fool to relinquish his bundle & has
exhibited the contents on the table. They are represented by the Sword
for Thought / Air, The Ornate cup for Emotions / Water, The Pentacle
for Senses / Earth & the Wand for Creativity / Fire. All of these
items were represented in the Fool’s pack, however it took the skill of
the Magician to show their true power &
potential.

Interpretation :
The Magician symbolises power. He has all the tools necessary to create
any situation or direct his life in any given direction. The Magician
has immense power but should be treated with care. Do not be drawn in
by his mis -direction, tricks or sleight of hand. He can talk anyone
into anything so be careful not to be seduced by his clever language.
If the Magician appears in a spread he is telling you that you have
access to his power. You may well be in a phase of your life when you
feel you could achieve anything.

Tarot The High Priestess – The Keeper Of The Keys

Appearance :

The next encounter for The Fool is with the enigmatic High
Priestess. In contrast with the brashness of The Magician, she is the
personification of veiled power. She appears between two pillars, one
white, one black, polar opposites, adorned with the letters B & J.
These are highly significant and form the entrance to some Masonic
Temples even today.

Interpretation :

The High Priestess has the power of second sight and proves it to
The Fool by showing that she knows all about his life & lack of
direction. She has information that will help him on his journey and
provides it in the form of ancient wisdom contained in the scrolls that
she hands him to revise. The High Priestess knows that The Magician has
returned the tools from The Fool’s napsack, she also knows that he is
at a loss what to do with them. Just then the light from the Moon picks
out some passages on the scrolls in front of The Fool and he realises
some of the options available to him. He makes a decision to move on
having formulated a rudimentary plan. He is curious as to what is
obscured from his vision by the pomegranate adorned curtain behind the
High Priestess but knows that he is not ready for this information.
They will meet again, perhaps on that occasion he may share this
precious secret.

My Relationship with The High Priestess

I love the High Priestess so much she is literally under my skin High Priestess Tattoo

The High Priestess always reminds me of “Solitaire” in the 1973 James
Bond film Live and Let Die. Her opening lines to Bond are : “I know who
you are, what you are and why you have come. You will not succeed!”.

Then Bond turns over a tarot card – the Fool.
Solitaire says : You have found yourself.

How Fabulous !

I have a replica of the famous deck from this movie, and I love it. A
great friend of mine calls me “Solitaire“, whenever he phones me the
conversation always starts with “ He travels by water ….. “ before he
falls apart laughing.

If only I could sit around all day in that iconic 70’s chair, perfectly
groomed and in a permanent Psychic Trance, Oh actually I already do ….

Tarot The Empress – The Beauty of Nature emerging

Appearance :

Mother Earth, Pregnant in a field of corn seated on a throne.
Her golden heart shaped shield represents imperial power and carries
the female symbol for Venus. References to her fertility are abundant.
Her crown is comprised of many six pointed stars and has astrological
significance. The sceptre she carries signifies the world and all of
its experiences. The flowing water behind her symbolises the union of
male and female.

Interpretation :

This card in my deck features a good friend of mine called Jo.
She was not pregnant at the time but I sensed that she would become a
fantastic mother as indeed she has. Jo is originally from the Forest of
Dean and has never lost that otherworldly quality, even though she has lived around the globe from New York to Jerusalem. This is important, The
Empress may travel far and wide but always carries with her a direct
connection to her roots and nature.
The Empress is the face of encouragement, she is comforting and
familiar. She symbolises that abundance can be yours and the support
you need to attain it is always available and can be relied upon unconditionally.
She can also signify that you should focus on your role as a mother, or
indeed you relationship with your own mother or mother figure.
She invariably indicates that a female friend, relative or associate
may surprise you by showing you love or compassion should you need it.
Primarily though I have found that the Empress embodies creativity and
artistic abilities and any such skills should be developed as they will
provide you with genuine satisfaction.

My experience of The Empress is to trust your intuition to enable your

with your femine side to free your life from the over analytical
influences of the male aspect of your personality. In your travels
never lose touch with your roots and remember to revel in the wonders
of nature. Next time the sun hits you face or you are lucky enough to
relax on a beach, or walk in a forest, connect with nature and remember how important this
is. All the wonders of civilisation & the latest gadgets may be
fascinating, but a connection with the universe is truly liberating, a
summons to overcome the limitations of the human condition.
Finally never forget the gift of life that your mother has bestowed on
you. She may drive you mad, ( I know mine does !), but listen to her.
Just maybe she has something to say that you should know. Her knowledge
and wisdom is not intellectually acquired but intuitive.

Appearance :

The crowned Emperor sits on his marbled cubic throne featuring
ram’s head carvings, symbolising Aries. The fiery barren landscape
around him symbolises his masculinity, authority & discipline. He
represents the opposite of the soft femininity of the The Empress. He
holds an Orb to represent his power over the laws of the material
world. The sceptre in his right hand reinforces his male potency, the
ankh which tops it is the ancient Egyptian symbol of life, something he
pursues with characteristic vigour. He is action personified, his robes
and demeanour emphasize his power & majesty. The heavy bejewelled
gold crown is a symbol & reminder of his worldy authority.

Interpretation :

The Emperor is father, ruler and warrior. Enterprising,
dominating, opinionated and aggressive. His function is to organize the
world for both himself and others. So, if The Emperor should appear in
your reading, it perhaps suggests it is time for you to take notice of
material concerns, take control of real-world concerns. This might be in terms of creating a
new job, changing jobs or even buying property. The Emperor symbolises
that the time is right for you to make these dreams reality. His
energy is about moving things on, making things happen; he is indeed a
helpful influence should you have been lacking discipline or direction.
You need to strive for stability and power, take on responsibility.

My Relationship with The Emperor
I am a typical Aries I have great enthusiasm and passion for all that life has to offer. If I recognise
myself going off on a creative tangent, ( thankfully
diminishing as I get older), a meditation on the Emperor card usually
helps to get me grounded. My card features an ex boss of mine, a
remarkably focused Danish guy who managed to keep it together in all
sorts of exceptional circumstances. If I find myself wasting energy by
letting my creativity explode into many scattered directions I find The
Emperor can help give me stability. If I have problems finding the
stamina to see one project through to completion, The Emperor can help
reactivate my limited powers of organization. He logically views the
situation and through the power of accurate observations applies his
expertise to make a success of any endeavour. He is indeed the logical driving
force of The Major Arcana. In conclusion I wish I could harbour some
more of the controlled leadership qualities inherent in the Emperor
whilst still retaining the fiery Aries creativity, a very difficult
prospect that needs endless determination and commitment.

Appearance :
The Hierophant, like the High Priestess, is seated between two pillars.
The Hierophant is depicted as either a man or a woman but always
represents the spiritual side of masculinity. The pillars represent
masculine & feminine, day & night, balance between opposing
forces or elements. The Hierophant is pure of spirit. The triple tiered
crown symbolises three states of existence, body, mind & spirit or
physical, emotional & mental responses, the sceptre, likewise, is crossed three times. The temple he represents
is of organised religion whereas the High Priestess symbolises the
esoteric. The crossed keys show the Hierophant has control over the
material & physical world. The right hand points to the heavens
& shows that what is to be found in heaven is also reflected on
earth if you are receptive to it. As above, so below.

Interpretation :
The Hierophant is your inner teacher & has the duty of revealing your ultimate spiritual path. Every one is on a spiritual quest & will eventually find the vibration that enables them to spread the most Light. We are not all destined to be incredible spritual teachers but when the Hierophant speaks to us we should accept that at this moment, we are exactly where we need to be. We should stop thirsting for more & just enjoy and give thanks for the quality of the moment.

The Hierophant in a divinatory reading shows a thirst for spiritual
knowledge. The physical foundation of the spiritual quest, not related
to any specific doctrine. The Hierophant is not religion but a physical
representation of it. The triple crown & triple sceptre lead you

My Relationship with The Hierophant

When the Hierophant appears to me in a reading I know that I
need to focus on the balance between the physical, mental &
emotional aspects of my life. It is easy to fall in to the trap of
chasing material security whilst neglecting spiritual & emotional
concerns.
The Hierophant represents spiritual development through organised
religion, but of no specific creed. Anyone who knows me will tell you
that my home is a testament to the fact that I have embraced many
different doctrines. It is full of Buddhas, Catholic Icons, Indian
& Oriental deities & books on every conceivable path. As far as
I can tell it is the physical, spiritual, emotional balance that is
expounded by all of these beliefs. In fact in Sanskrit the word for a
union between spritual, emotional & physical states is ‘yoga’ &
the times that I have applied myself to regular yoga classes have been
some of my most balanced periods. Of course these good intentions are
always pushed aside by work or socialising. Time to get the yoga mat
out again perhaps, though I don't think my dodgy hip will stand it ! … The challenge is that the ego & thirst for
material stability stubbornly refuse to accept the developing need for
internal truths.
